The Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Union was a women's sports organization which oversaw women's university level sport in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The ice hockey league ran off and on from its founding in 1921 until it was replaced by the Ontario Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which itself lasted from 1971 until being replaced by the Ontario University Athletics women's ice hockey League in 1997,which was formed when the women's and men's university level leagues came under the same umbrella.
For most of if not all of its history the league was the highest level of women's ice hockey in Canada as there was no professional women's leagues or a national championship at the university level for women's ice hockey.
The University of Toronto would drop the women's program in 1935 due to the great depression and it would be reinstated in 1948 but would not have any university level competition due to Queen's and McGill suspendending their programs from 1951 to 1960.

The league did not operate from 1935 to 1948 and from 1951 to 1960 as several teams dropped and reinstated their women's ice hockey programs.
