2017-2018: Wiarton Schooners

The Wiarton Schooners were a Canadian Junior ice hockey team based in Wiarton, Ontario. The team is in the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League (GMHL). The team is based out of the Wiarton Arena & Community Centre. The team was added as an expansion team for the 2017-18 season. The team replaces a defunct team named the Wiarton Rock which had folded during the 2016-17 season.

Point of Clarification

According to the league's website when the schedule was posted for the 2017-18 season the team was now listed as an expansion team. An e-mail during the spring of 2017 that was sent to the league's e-mail address was responded to by the league's president Bob Russel stated the Rock were purchased as a new team from the league after the owners of the Wiarton Rock franchise folded their team.

My apologies to John and Beth Dyer as the information posted was apparently hurtful to them as they were apparently a victim of the previous ownership as they served as a host family for team members.

The team was removed from the schedule on November 19, 2018. The franchise had been terminated without option for return.[1]
