The USA Hockey Arena is a multi-purpose arena in Plymouth Township, Michigan. Originally known as the "Compuware Sports Arena," its name was officially shortened on September 11, 2007 to Compuware Arena, to better market the venue for non-sporting events it hosted. The arena took its current name when it was sold to USA Hockey as home for it USA Hockey National Team Development Program playing in the USHL.
Peter Karmanos, the President of Compuware and owner of the Detroit Whalers, arranged to build the Whalers a new home as soon as the 1995-96 season ended after playing that season at two temporary venues, the tiny Oak Park Ice Arena and the massive Palace of Auburn Hills. The Compuware Sports Arena was constructed in 6 months time, ready for the 1996-97 season. The team remained the Detroit Whalers after moving to Plymouth Township and then were renamed the Plymouth Whalers in 1997-98.
The arena was sold March 31, 2015 to USA Hockey and would become home to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and its USHL franchise. The arena would be renamed the "USA Hockey Arena". As a result of the purchase the Whaler franchise would move to Flint, Michigan and become the Flint Firebirds begining with the 2015-16 season. The arena with its' two sheets of ice, restaurant, pro shop and drive in theatre will be operated by USA Hockey and the Compuware youth hockey program would remain at the arena.
