The Steelers entered the MJHL as an expansion team for the 1966-67 season. The following season Selkirk joined with the Dauphin Kings, Portage Terriers, and Fort Garry Frontiersmen and started the Central Manitoba Junior Hockey League. The very next year, the CMJHL merged with the MJHL.
The 1973-74 Steelers won the MJHL title, then defeated the Prince Albert Raiders 4-games-to-2 to win the Anavet Cup. They went on to compete for the Abbott Cup against the Kelowna Buckaroos of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League and defeated them 4-games-to-3. This moved the Steelers along to the National Championship against the Smiths Falls Bears of the Central Junior A Hockey League for the Centennial Cup, the National Championship. The series went the distance, with the Steelers stealing Game seven 1-0 in overtime to clinch the National Title.
The 1974 Steelers were inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
The Steelers played in the Selkirk Arena from 1966 to 1990.
