Franchise History
The Franchise was founded in 2001 as the San Diego Surf. At the time the WSHL was a Tier III Jr. B league at the time. It played as the Surf from 2001 until 2008. The team took the current name, San Diego Gulls starting in 2008, reflecting the history of the San Diego Gulls- the name of three minor professional hockey franchises in San Diego. In 2015 with a new American Hockey League franchise arriving in town the junior level team announced they were changing their name to the San Diego Sabers so that the name could go to the new AHL team
