The Rover is a historic, but near extinct, player position in ice hockey.

History[]

Traditionally, the game of hockey started out in many areas of North America with seven players to a side on the ice: a goaltender, two defencemen, a centre, two wingers, and a rover. The position was akin to having a "centre defensemen", but was pretty much eradicated from the game in 1923 when the remaining pro-leagues that still used the position chose to drop it.

A rover is still sometimes used in minor hockey at the tyke and pre-novice levels.
