Robert Dowd (born on May 26, 1988 in Billingham) is an English professional ice hockey right/left winger currently playing with the Sheffield Steelers.

Club career[]

Dowd began his junior career with the Billingham Bears. In the 2002-03 season, Dowd played 12 games with the Billingham Bears and 10 games with the Billingham Wolves.

He made his senior debut in the 2003-04 season when he played 14 games with the Billingham Bombers of the ENL while he also played 14 games with the Billingham Bears and 13 games with the Billingham Wolves.

In the 2004-05 season, Dowd played 15 games with the Billingham Bombers of the ENL, 1 game with the Solihull Kings of the EPIHL and 15 games with the Billingham Bombers under-18 team.

In 2005, Dowd moved to North America in order to play the 2005-06 season with the Detroit Trackers 18U AAA.

A year later, Dowd returned to Great Britain and played 2 games with the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL and 31 regular season games and 6 play-off games with the Sheffield Scimitars of the EPIHL.

In the 2007-08 season played Dowd 27 regular season games and 5 play-off games with the Sheffield Scimitars of the EPIHL and 7 regular season games and 2 play-off games with the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL. In this season, Dowd became the EIHL Play-off champion with the Sheffield Steelers.

In 2008 - 2011, Dowd continued with the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL. In the 2008-09 season, Dowd became the EIHL champion and EIHL Play-off champion while he scored most goals (23) among the British U23s of the EIHL and recorded most points (44) among the British U23s of the EIHL and was also named the Young British Player of the Year. In the 2009-10 season, Dowd had most assists (24) among the British U23s of the EIHL. In the 2010-11 season, he became the EIHL champion again while he scored most assists (32) among the British U23s of the EIHL and most points (57) among the British U23s of the EIHL.

In the 2011-12 season, Dowd played with the Belfast Giants of the EIHL. In this season, he became the EIHL champion again while he was selected the Best British Forward, the EIHL British Player of the Year, made it into the EIHL All-Star First Team and also scored most points (19) among all players at the EIHL Cup.

In the next season played Dowd with the IF Troja-Ljungby of the HockeyAllsvenskan.

In 2013 - 2020, Dowd was again playing with the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL. In the 2013-14 season, he became the EIHL Play-off champion. In the next two seasons, he became the EIHL champion. In the 2016-17 season, Dowd became the EIHL Play-off champion and was also named the EIHL Player of the Week on March 12, 2017. In the 2019-20 season, he became the EIHL Cup champion.

Due to delayed start of the British 2020-21 season, Dowd began this season with the Eppan/Appiano of the Italian Hockey League. After 13 regular season games and 3 play-off games played there, Dowd finished the season with 10 games played with the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL Series (shortened substitute of the EIHL).

He is currently signed with the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL until the end of the 2021-22 season.

International career[]

Dowd played with the British National Team at the 2005 World U18 Championship Division I, 2006 World U18 Championship Division II (winning there gold while also being the player with most points (14) recorded at the tournament), 2007 and 2008 World Junior Championships Division I (winning bronze at the 2007 tournament), 2009, 2010 and 2011 World Championships Division I (winning bronze at the 2009 tournament and silver in 2011), 2012, 2013 and 2018 World Championship Division IA (scoring most goals (5) and most points (9) at the 2012 tournament and winning gold in 2018), 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 World Championship Division IB (winning silver at the 2015 and 2016 tournaments and gold in 2017 tournament) and at the 2019 World Championship.
