Retirement is an unavoidable step in a player's career, as it is specifically the moment when said career ends. Most of the times, players chose to end their career when they feel they are getting too old and that their skills decline; some less fortunate find themselves forced to retire because of injuries.

While for most players retirement marks the end of their ties with professional hockey, for some others, it is simply a change of relationship. Indeed, there are many players who turn to coaching, scouting or management when their careers are over; some of them end up with long and fruitful careers after hanging their skates, like Pat Quinn, Al Arbour or Glen Sather.
