Overview
"Cougars" is the name of the sports teams of the University of Regina located in Regina, Saskatchewan. Their home arena is The Co-operators Centre. They are members of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).
The Regina Cougars hockey team started play in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in the 1976-77 season. They joined the University of Winnipeg, Lakehead University, the University of Manitoba, and Brandon University.
The Cougars joined the CWUAA in the 1984-85 season (along with Manitoba and Brandon) when the GPAC folded. They joined the University of British Columbia, University of Alberta. University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge, and the University of Saskatchewan. Mount Royal University became the 2nd team of Cougars in the conference in 2012-13.
