Recreational leagues (commonly referred to as beer leagues) are non-competitive amateur leagues played for fun by a number of players who love the game but lack the skills to play at the professional level, or sometimes, who retired from professional level and play recreational hockey to stay in touch with the game.

Even though those many of these leagues can technically be filled by whoever pays his subscription and loves the game, some require a minimum level of skill to maintain a good competition among teams.

There exists a world championship for recreational league teams, the CARHA Hockey World Cup.
