He played junior hockey for the Portland Winterhawks and won the Memorial Cup in 1983. The New York Rangers chose him 33rd overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Heath played for Canada at the 1984 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

Heath turned pro in 1984-85 but only got into 13 games for the Rangers in his first two pro seasons. Discouraged, Heath then went to Sweden where he played for Skellefteå AIK in 1986-87 and Västerås IK.
