In 1945 he joined the San Francisco Shamrocks for two seasons. Buchanan then played for the Shawinigan Falls Cataractes of the Quebec Senior Hockey League from 1947 to 1952. He was an All-Star four times amd won the Byng of Vimy Trophy in 1948 and 1950. While there he was brought up by the New York Rangers for two games in 1948-49. He did not score any points in the NHL.
He continued in the Quebec League until 1957 with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens and Quebec Aces. He finished off the 1956-57 season with the senior Kingston CKLC's. His last season was 1957-58 with the senior Pembroke Lumber Kings.
