[edit] Creation

The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) approved a new ice hockey team in Pensacola, Florida, United States. The team name was announced in a new conference on 8 May 2009 as the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

The SPHL will begin the season in October 2009, but the Pensacola group is required to sell 1,250 season tickets by August 15, 2009 or they will have to skip this season and try again before the 2010-11 season. If they don't meet the ticket requirement by then, the lease between the team and the county will be nullified.

On July 22, 2009 the SPHL released its schedule for the 2009-10 season, incorporating the Pensacola Ice Flyers, along with the league's other teams. The Ice Flyers will begin with five consecutive road games before playing at the Pensacola Civic Center. Three of the five games, including the Oct. 23 season opener, will be played in Louisiana.
