The New Brunswick Junior Hockey League was formed out of the ashes of the New Brunswick Junior C Hockey League which disbanded after the 2010-11 season when all but one of the league's four teams folded and the remaining team, the Hampton Hurricanes moved up to the New Brunswick Junior B Hockey League. The Junior B league played through the 2011-12 season and then was renamed the New Brunswick Junior Hockey League as a mixed level league (Junior B and Junior C).  The first season had eight teams with four playing at each level.  The league lost the Miramichi River Maniacs after the 2012-13 season and added the Kent Koyotes and the Fundy Cobras (based out of Blacks Harbour) to the league for the 2013-14 season.

For 2014-15 the league added the Sackville Storm and the Sunny Corner Thunder as expansion teams.  Sackville as a junior C team and Sunny Corner is a Junior B team.

For 2015-16 the Hampton Hurricanes changed their name to the Southern Sting which coincided with a move to the Quispamsis QPlex. The league also lost the Fundy Cobras and Sackville Storm, when both teams folded

With the present set up of the league the Junior B champion advances to the Don Johnson Memorial Cup and the Junior C champion advances to the Maritime-Hockey North Junior C Championship.
