HistoryEdit

Montreal St Francois Xavier was first an intermediate, then a senior team in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

They first showed up as a team in the Montreal Hockey League in 1919-20. But their best years were in the Mount Royal Intermediate League starting in 1923-24.

They won the league title in 1925-26 and then, despite being an intermediate club, won the 1926-27 Quebec Senior Playoffs. Unfortunately they had to default out of the 1926-27 Eastern Canada Allan Cup Playoffs beacause of the lateness of the season.

After taking a two year hiatus, they again won the league title in 1928-29 and then won the 1928-29 Quebec Senior Playoffs. Amazingly they also won the 1928-29 Eastern Canada Allan Cup Playoffs, the first intermediate team to do so. They lost the 1928-29 Allan Cup Final to Port Arthur.

St Francois Xavier won the next two league titles but were narrowly beaten out both times in the Quebec senior playoffs. (see 1929-30 Quebec Senior Playoffs & 1930-31 Quebec Senior Playoffs). In 1931-32 they lost the league final,

In 1932-33 the Mount Royal League was elevated to senior. St Francois again won the league title but lost the 1932-33 Quebec Senior Playoffs.

The Mount Royal Senior League merged with the Montreal Senior Group for the 1933-34 season. St Francois finished in fifth place and out of the playoffs. That was their last season.

In 1934 the team was knocked out of the Senior Group to make room for the new Ottawa Senators franchise. St. Francois then bypassed the Quebec Amateur Hockey Association (QAHA) and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) and sued in court to get back into the group. The court action failed. According to CAHA rules any team that initiated a court case without appealing to the Association first would be banned from organized hockey. That is exactly what the QAHA did to St. Francois Xavier.
