Michael Barnett (born 1948 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian ice hockey executive currently serving as advisor and scout with the New York Rangers. He was formerly a professional ice hockey player, sports agent, and National Hockey League general manager.
Barnett played for the St. Lawrence University Skating Saints before turning pro. Barnett's professional career led him to play for the Long Island Cougars (the NAHL affiliate of the WHA's Chicago Cougars), and the Roanoke Valley Rebels (affiliate of the Houston Aeros), however his playing career ended due to an eye injury in 1975. Following his playing career, Barnett joined IMG's hockey division as an agent, helping negotiate contracts for several high-profile players including Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, Paul Coffey, Jaromir Jagr, Joe Thornton, Lanny McDonald, Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Mogilny, Owen Nolan, Mats Sundin, and Dany Heatley. From 2001 to 2007 he was the GM for the Phoenix Coyotes.
