The Medicine Hat Cubs are a junior B team based out of the Kinplex in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The team was established in 1973. The team played in the Central Alberta Junior Hockey League and IJHL prior to joining the Heritage Junior B Hockey League for the 2002-03 season. The team was forced to suspend operations in Mid-January of 2016 due to a lack of players. The league had stated they were hoping to have the team return for the 2016-17 season
Championships
The team has won the 13 championships in lower level leagues between 1978 and 2001; including 9 CAJHL championships (1977-78, 1978-79, 1980-81, 1985-86, 1987-88, 1988-89, 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93) and 4 IJHL championships (1994-95, 1995-96, 1999-00, 2000-01)
History
The Cubs were founded in 1973 into the Heritage Junior B Hockey League. In their fifth year, 1977-78, they won the league championship for the first time, repeating as champions the next season. In the 1980s and 90s the Cubs became a sort of junior hockey dynasty, winning the league championship again in 1980-81, 85-86, 87-88, 90-91, 91-92, 92-93, 94-95, 95-96, 99-00 and 00-01. In this time two Cubs players went on to play in the National Hockey League (Blaine Lacher and Murray Craven) Since the 2001 season the Cubs have more or less struggled compared to former seasons, including some highly rough recent years.[1] The Cubs took a mid-season leave of absence in January 2016 after deciding not to finish out the 2015–16 season with too few players.[2]
