Matthew Joseph Glennon (born September 20, 1968) is a retired American ice hockey player who played three games in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins during the 1991–92 NHL season.

Professional career[]

Glennon was drafted by the Bruins 119th overall in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. After four years in Boston College, he finally turned pro in 1991, spliting the year in the ECHL with the Johnstown Chiefs and the American Hockey League's Maine Mariners as well as his brief spell with the Boston Bruins where in his three games he scored no points and collected two penalty minutes.

ECHL suspension[]

Glennon would return to the Johnstown Chiefs for the 1991-92 ECHL playoffs. During a game against the Cincinnati Cyclones on March 29, 1992 at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena, Glennon would be ejected for arguing a two-line pass call with officials Norm Eberle and Bob Willer[1]. Later in the game, linemate Brian Ferreira would also be ejected, coincidentally also for arguing a two-line pass call.

At this point, Glennon met Ferreira as he came off the ice and handed him a pair of skate guards[2]. Both players then made an attempt to confront then-ECHL Commissioner Pat Kelly, who was seated in the press box[3]. Statisticians prevented the pair from crossing to the box where Commissioner Kelly was seated. As a result, both Ferreira (who had thrown the game puck at Kelly prior to his exit) and Glennon both received 30 games suspensions, which started the following season[3] due to the Chiefs being eliminated that same night.

The following season though he only played six games for the AHL's Providence Bruins, ending his affiliation with the Boston Bruins.

Glennon would go on to play one season with the Bayreuth Tigers of 2nd Bundesliga, a second-tier team in Germany, before retiring at the conclusion of the 1993-94 season.
