On May 15, 2009 at a news conference it was annouced that the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) approved an application to operate a ice hockey team in Lafayette, Louisiana, United States, in October 2009.

The team, to be named the Louisana IceGator's will play in the 2009-10 season with SPHL in the Blackham Coliseum located in Lafayette, LA.
