Hockey Manitoba awards the Provincial Junior A Champions the Turnbull Cup. The Champions represent Manitoba at the Western Canadian Junior A Championship for the Western Canada Cup. The winner and the runner-up of the WC Cup tournament both represent Western Canada at the RBC Cup for the National Championship.

The history of Junior A hockey in Manitoba is told thru Manitoba Junior Hockey League. The MJHL and it’s predecessor the Winnipeg and District Junior Hockey League dated back to 1917. National play, the Memorial Cup, did not start until the following season.

Since the creation of the Canadian Junior Hockey League in 1993, the MHJL crowns a Manitoba Champion.

Prior to then, the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association could instruct the MJHL Champs to enter provincial playoffs. Such happened from 1980 thru 1985, when MJHL Champs met the winner of the NorMan Junior Hockey League. In 1968 it was the Central Manitoba Junior Hockey League, in 1932 it was it's name sake the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, and a few independent teams during the years. The MJHL and it’s predecessor the WJrHL have won every Turnbull Cup, except one (1918 to present), symbolic of Manitoba Junior A Hockey Champions.

It should also be noted, the Flin Flon Bombers currently play in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The Bombers have a long history in the SJHL. A couple of other teams also played in the SJHL, the Brandon Wheat Kings for two seasons, 1964-66, and the Prince Albert Mintos, who relocated to Dauphin after fire destroyed part of their arena on December 12, 1961. The Mintos finished the season based out of Dauphin.
