He played junior hockey for the Nanaimo Clippers in 1979-80, scoring 185 points in only 65 games. The Montreal Canadiens chose him 45th overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft but he went to the University of Wisconsin for two years. Newberry was a 30-goal scorer and an all-star in both seasons.

In 1982-83 Newberry turned pro with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs. He played three seasons mostly in the American Hockey League, but did see 20 games (including one playoff game) of action with Montreal.

Newberry signed as a free agent with the Hartford Whalers in 1985 but only played three games for the NHL team in 1985-86. He played most of the season in the American Hockey League.

Ready for a new start, he moved to Europe in 1986. His first team was Karpat Oulu in Finland. Newberry also played in Sweden, Switzerland, and Great Britain before retiring in 1993.
