Johan Garpenlöv (born on March 21, 1968 in Stockholm) is a retired Swedish right winger. He was drafted in the fifth round, 85th overall, by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently the head coach of the Swedish National Team.

Club career[]

The Stockholm native began with the Nacka HK squad of the Division 1 in 1984 - 1986. He joined the prestigious Djurgårdens IF club of the Elitserien in 1986-87 and helped them win consecutive championships in 1989 and 1990.

The 1990-91 season was Garpenlöv's first North American season. Garpenlöv played his first NHL season with the Detroit Red Wings. He scored 40 regular season points and 1 point in the play-offs as a rookie in the 1990-91 season, including a four-goal game against the St. Louis Blues on November 23, 1990.

During the 1991-92 season, after 16 games played with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL and 9 games played with the Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL, Garpenlöv was traded to the San Jose Sharks of the NHL. He finished there the season with 12 games played.

Garpenlöv scored 22 goals with the San Jose Sharks in the 1992-93 season. In the 1993-94 season, he and his linemates, Sergei Makarov and Igor Larionov, helped the club come within a game of reaching the Western Conference Finals.

Garpenlöv also began the 1994-95 season with the Sharks. In March 1995, after only 13 games played in the season, Garpenlöv was traded to the Florida Panthers of the NHL for future considerations. He finished there the season with 27 games played. In the 1995-96 season, he scored a personal-high 23 goals in the regular season and was a part of the third year club's remarkable drive to the Stanley Cup final. Garpenlöv battled injuries over the next three seasons. Then, in the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft, he was claimed by the expansion Atlanta Thrashers and was a member of the club for its inaugural season in 1999-00.

Prior to the 2000-01 campaign, Garpenlöv brought his NHL tenure to an end and returned to Sweden to play with the Djurgårdens IF of the Elitserien for one last season to win Garpenlöv's third Elitserien title.

International career[]

Garpenlöv represented Sweden as a junior at the 1985 and 1986 European U18 Championships winning gold medal in 1985 and silver medal 1986. Then he also played at the 1987 and 1988 World Junior Championships winning bronze medal in 1987.


He also played with the Swedish National Team at the 1990, 1991 and 1992 World Championships winning silver medal in 1990 and gold medals in 1991 and 1992. He also participated at the 1991 Canada Cup and at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

As the team staff member, he represented Sweden at the 2004 and 2016 World Cups of Hockey, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2018 and 2019 World Championships (winning silver in 2011 and gold in 2017 and 2018) and at the 2018 Olympics.


Team staff career[]

Garpenlöv began his team staff career in 2002 becoming the assistant coach of the Djurgårdens IF of the Elitserien. He stayed there until the end of the 2004-05 season. In 2004, Garpenlöv was also the assistant coach of Swedish National Team at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

Garpenlöv came back in 2008 becoming the pro scout for the Dallas Stars of the NHL for two seasons.

Then he was the team manager of the Swedish National Team at the 2011 and 2012 World Championships.


Garpenlöv came back again in 2016 becoming the assistant coach of the Swedish National Team for the whole season. His first season included 2016 World Cup of Hockey and 2017 World Championship. He was the assistant coach also for the next two seasons including 2018 Olympics and 2018 and 2019 World Championships. Since the 2019-20 season, Garpenlöv is the head coach of the Swedish National Team.
