He played Junior "B" with the Bobcaygeon Bobcats and senior with the Belleville Mohawks before the Boston Bruins signed him as a free agent in 1968. He got into 8 minutes of a game with the Bruins in 1968-69 and otherwise played in the Bruins' farm system.

After an all-star year in 1972-73 with the Syracuse Blazers, Junkin signed with the New Jersey Knights of the World Hockey Association (WHA). He played in 53 games in 1973-74 with the Knights and another 16 in 1973-74 when they moved to become the San Diego Mariners.

Junkin retired in 1976 after two years in the minor pros.
