The team's colours are the traditional Hamilton colours of Black and Gold. The team are Hamilton's first top level senior team since the Hamilton Tigers played in OHA Senior A from 1932 to 1954. The nickname is an homage to the Hamilton Steelhawks Ontario Hockey League team which played in Hamilton from 1984 to 1988 who relocated to Niagara Falls to become the Niagara Falls Thunder and are now known as the Erie Otters.
The team would be renamed the Hamilton Steelers prior to the 2022-23 season. The team would then relocate to the Gateway Arena in Stoney Creek prior to the 2023-24 season and assume the Stoney Creek Tigers name.
