Steven P. Rooney (born June 28, 1962 in Canton, Massachusetts, United States) is a retired American ice hockey forward who played for the Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets, and the New Jersey Devils of the NHL.

Rooney played his high school hockey at the Canton HS graduating in 1981. Then he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens 88th overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He then went to Providence College, graduating in 1985.

He started his National Hockey League career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1985. The Canadiens were a lot of talent and Rooney faced an uphill battle to get ice time. However, he managed to get in enough time in the 1985-86 NHL season to qualify for the team's Stanley Cup victory.

He was traded to the Winnipeg Jets in 1987 where he saw more ice time. In 1990 he was sent to the New Jersey Devils. Rooney played his last seasons in the minor pros and retired in 1992.

Rooney played a total of 154 NHL regular season games, scoring 15 goals and 13 assists with 496 penalty minutes, In the playoffs he played 25 games and scored 3 goals and 2 assists with 86 penalty minutes,
