Gerhard Unterluggauer

Gerhard Unterluggauer (born on August 15, 1976 in Villach) is a retired Austrian professional defenceman who has the most games played (166) for the Austrian National Team. He is currently the sports manager with the Villacher SV of the ICEHL.

Club career[]

Unterluggauer began his career with the Villacher SV of the Austrian Bundesliga in the 1992-93 season. Unterluggauer became the Austrian champion with the Villacher SV in his very first senior season in 1993. He stayed there until the end of the 1994-95 season.

In 1995 - 1997, Unterluggauer played with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL.

After these two years, he returned to the Villacher SV of the Austrian Bundesliga and in the 1999-00 season also playing in the IEL where he stayed until the end of the 2000-01 season. In the 1998-99 season, Unterluggauer became the Austrian champion with the Villacher SV for the second time.

In 2001, he tried his luck in Germany with the SERC Wild Wings of the DEL. After a single season with the SERC Wild Wings, he moved to the DEG Metro Stars of the DEL and stayed there until the end of the 2003-04 season.

In 2004, he came back to his homeland, joining the HC Innsbruck of the EBEL (formerly Austrian Bundesliga).

With the team's financial problems in 2009 and its voluntary demotion to the Nationalliga, Gerhard Unterluggauer found himself forced to leave the team - he joined the Villacher SV of the EBEL. He played with the Villacher SV of the EBEL until the end of the 2015-16 season. In the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, he was named the EBEL Kärtner Eishockey Superstar des Jahres.

In the 2016-17 season which was his last one, Unterluggauer played with the UECR Huben of the AHC Division 1.

International career[]

Unterluggauer is the player who played most games with the Austrian National Team. He participated at the 1993, 1994 and 1995 World Junior Championships "Pool B" (being the most penalized player of the tournament in 1994), 1994 European U18 Championship "Pool B", 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 World Championships (being named one of the top 3 players on the Austrian team at the 2004 and 2009 tournaments and being the defenceman who scored most goals (3) at the tournament in 2005), 1997 World Championship "Pool B", 1998, 2002 and 2014 Olympics, 2008 and 2010 World Championships Division I (winning gold at both tournaments and also being the defenceman who scored most goals (3) and most points (6) at the tournament in 2008) and at the 2012 World Championship Division IA (winning there silver)
