He left the NHL after the 1994 season. He played several more years in the IHL with the Minnesota Moose, Italy with HC Bolzano and Asiago Hockey AS, Germany in the DEL with ESV Kaufbeuren, and England in the BISL with the Manchester Storm before retiring after the 2001 season. The Save[]

Frank Pietrangelo is probably best remembered for one play in the 1991 Stanley Cup playoffs. In the first period of Game 6 of Pittsburgh's first-round playoff series at New Jersey, Pietrangelo dove to his left to make a dramatic glove save against the Devils' Peter Stastny, who was shooting toward an open net. The memorable play became known in Pittsburgh as "The Save." Pietrangelo's stop helped the Penguins to a 4-3 win and forced a seventh game. Pietrangelo then shut out the Devils 4-0 in Game 7.
