Bob McCord (born March 20, 1934 in Matheson, Ontario) is a retired professional ice hockey defenceman who played 316 games in the National Hockey League. He played for the Minnesota North Stars, Detroit Red Wings, and Boston Bruins.
Playing Career[]
McCord started out in junior with the Porcupine Combines and the Kitchener Greenshirts. He then joined the Montreal Junior Canadiens but never got chance to wear the uniform of the parent club.
He spent the next nine years with the AHL's Springfield Indians and the Trois Rivieres Lions of the Quebec Hockey League. He was considered one of the best stay-at-home defenceman in the minors and was named to the QHL second all-star team in 1959 and placed on the AHL first all-star team twice and second all-star squad three times.
The veteran minor leaguer finally received a chance to make it in the NHL with the Boston Bruins in 1963-64. He was a regular for two years and then was acquired by the Detroit Red Wings to fill in for injured players and stabilize the blueline on the AHL's Pittsburgh Hornets. In 1967 he was presented the Eddie Shore Award as the league's top defenceman.
Early in the 1967-68 season, McCord was given a second chance at full time NHL work when he was picked up by the expansion Minnesota North Stars. He was a stable influence on the club and helped them reach the semi-finals in 1968. After three years in the Western Hockey League, McCord joined the St. Louis Blues for 43 games in 1972-73 then returned to the minors. He retired in 1975 after playing a year with the Central Hockey League's Denver Spurs.
In his NHL career, McCord scored 10 goals and 58 assists.
