The 228th Battalion was a unit of the Canadian Army in World War I that was recruited in 1916 in northern Ontario. It was then based and trained in Toronto during the 1916-17 season.
While awaiting shipment overseas, the battalion organized teams in the National Hockey Association (NHA) and the senior and junior series of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA).
All the teams were forced to curtail their seasons when the battalion had to ship out overseas.
