The Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) is a professional ice hockey league from Germany, the country's highest. The league was created in 1994 as a replacement for the old 1.Bundesliga; the only major difference between the former 1.Bundesliga and the current DEL is that the latter is not under the administration of the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund.
The league is semi-closed, which means there can be no automatic promotion and relegation between the DEL and the 2.Bundesliga; however, teams wishing to step down to the 2.Bundesliga are free to, as long as they purchase a 2.Bundesliga licence. Likewise, a champion club from the 2.Bundesliga that desires to join the DEL is welcome to, as long as it meets the league's requirements. The last team admitted into the DEL was
