David Musil (born on April 9, 1993 in Calgary, Canada) is a Czech-Canadian ice hockey defenceman who is currently playing with the HC Oceláři Třinec of the Tipsport Extraliga. He was a first round draft pick, selected 12th overall by the SKA Saint Petersburg, in the 2010 KHL Junior Draft. Musil was selected 1st in the second round, 31st overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.[1]

He is the son of former NHL player František Musil. His uncle, Bobby Holik, also played in the NHL, and his grandfather, Jaroslav Holík, competed in ice hockey at the 1972 Winter Olympics with the Czechoslovakia national ice hockey team. His great uncle is Jiří Holík. His younger brother Adam Musil also plays hockey.

Club career[]

Musil began his junior career with the HC Dukla Jihlava organisation. During the 2006-07 season, he also appeared in the SK Horácká Slavia Třebíč organisation. He made his senior debut during the 2008-09 season when he played 9 games with the HC Dukla Jihlava under-18 team, 26 regular season games and 8 play-off games with the HC Dukla Jihlava under-20 team and 14 regular season games plus 4 play-off games with the HC Dukla Jihlava of the 1. Liga.

In 2009, Musil moved to North America to play with the Vancouver Giants of the WHL. He played there for 3 full seasons. In the 2010-11 season, he also appeared at the CHL Top Prospects Game. Musil also began the 2012-13 season with the Giants but after 14 games played, he moved to the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL. He finished there the season with 48 regular season games and 22 play-off games played.

Musil then spent the 2013-14 season mostly with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL. He played there 61 regular season games and 2 play-off games. He also played 3 games with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.

During the 2014-15 season, Musil played 4 games with the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL and 65 regular season games plus 6 play-off games with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL.

Musil then spent the whole 2015-16 season with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL.

During the 2016-17 season played Musil 47 games with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL and 13 games on loan with the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL.

Since 2017, Musil is playing with the HC Oceláři Třinec of the Tipsport Extraliga. In the 2018-19 season, Musil had the best plus/minus in the Tipsport Extraliga play-offs and helped his team win the Tipsport Extraliga title. In the 2020-21 season, he became the Tipsport Extraliga champion for the second time. In 2021, Musil extended his contract with the HC Oceláři Třinec of the Tipsport Extraliga until the end of the 2021-22 season.

International career[]

Musil played with the Czech National Team at the 2009 and 2011 World U18 Championships[2] (at the 2011 tournament was Musil named one of the top 3 players on the Czech squad), 2012 and 2013 World Junior Championships and at the 2019 World Championship.
