Hutton grew up playing minor hockey in his hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario. He played junior A in the SIJHL in his hometown for the Fort William North Stars. Upon graduation from the junior ranks, Hutton left for UMass-Lowell, where he began playing for the River Hawks in 2006-07. During his four-year stay, Hutton set all-time school records for career goals against average (2.33), shutouts (10) and save percentage (.913).
Initially, Hutton was signed to a tryout contract with the American Hockey League's Adirondack Phantoms after the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, because he was still in school, Hutton was only available to the team on weekends. However, the revolving goaltending situation with the parent Philadelphia Flyers saw him ink an emergency one-game amateur tryout contract with the NHL club. Hutton dressed for the Flyers for their March 28, 2010 game against the New Jersey Devils, though he did not see any action.
In four AHL games in 2009-10 Hutton posted a 1-2-1 record with a 2.71 goals against average.
A free agent, Hutton signed a one-year deal with the San Jose Sharks. He will be eligible for restricted free agency after the 2010-11 season.
