Starting in the 1930's, some Canadian hockey players found employment with continental European hockey teams. They often were coaches and helped raise the standard of play.
When a Canadian team visited the continent, a composite team of these players was often put together to provide tough competition. It was the only chance that Europeans would get to see Canadian teams playing each other.
