He returned to civilian life in 1944-45 and played 3 more games for Detroit. McDonald was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks in January, 1945. He played the last 26 games of the season for Chicago, scoring 6 goals and 13 assists. However, that was the end of his NHL career. He played two seasons for the Kansas City Pla-Mors of the United States Hockey League, scoring 99 points in 1945-46.
