The Brad Hornung Trophy is presented annually to the Western Hockey League player who has exhibited the best of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability. The trophy is named after former Regina Pats player Brad Hornung who stopped breathing after slammed head first into the boards when he was checked during a WHL game on March 1, 1987. Doctors and the trainer had to resuscitate him and perform a tracheotomy to restore his breathing. The incident left Hornung permanently paralyzed.

Previously, the Frank Boucher Memorial Trophy. Frank Boucher was Commissioner of the league for it's first two seasons. Boucher spent 29 years with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League as a player, coach, and General Manager winning three Stanley Cups. Boucher was awarded the NHL’s equivalent trophy the Lady Byng seven times in eight years. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958.
