Bob Froese (born June 30, 1958 in St. Catharines, Ontario) is a retired Canadian professional goaltender.
Playing career[]
Froese played junior hockey for the St. Catharines Black Hawks until the team moved to Niagara Falls Flyers from 1974-75 thorugh 1977-78. He was drafted by the St. Louis Blues 160th overall in the 1978 NHL Entry Draft. He played 4 years in the minor pros, winning the Calder Trophy with Saginaw Gears of the I.H.L.before the Philadelphia Flyers signed him as a free agent in 1981.
In 1982-83 he set a rookie record for longest undefeated string to begin a career with (12-0-1). When Pelle Lindbergh died suddenly in 1985 Froese shared the William M. Jennings Trophy with Darren Jensenand also made the second all star team that year.
The following seasn, with the eemergence of Ron Hextall, the Flyers traded Froese to the New York Rangers. He played four seasons there until retiring in 1990.
He played for a total of eight seasons, appearing in 242 games and winning 128.
On November 28, 1987, Froese briefly became the second NHL goalie to score a goal in a game. An errant pass by the New York Islanders' Brent Sutter slid the length of the ice and into the Islanders' empty net on a delayed penalty call. Froese, the closest Ranger player to the play, was given credit for the goal. Later reviews showed that Froese had not actually touched the puck, and the scoring was changed. The play was still under review when Ron Hextall scored on December 8, 1987, and Hextall was thus hailed at the time as the third, not the second, goalie to score in an NHL game.
