The Battle River Hockey league dates back to the 2002-03 season as archive websites list some information as early as Febraruary 2, 2003. The league plays under the sanctioning of the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association.

Reliable information dates back to the start of the 2009-10 season as this is still stored on the league's website. Parital information is available on the 2004-05, and 2006-07, 2007-08 seasons.

The league would fold during the summer of 2015 after the Daysland North Stars announced they were joining the North Central Senior Hockey League.  The league tried to get at least one additional team signed up but could not.  The league worked on adding the remaining teams also into the league.  Lloydminster Border Kings announced they didn't want to jump and would sit out the 2015-16 season.  The Big Valley Oil Kings, Bonnyville Pontiacs, and Tofield Satellites would be accepted by the NCHL for the 2015-16 season.  This would be the last act of the league
