Andrej Šustr (born on November 29, 1990 in Plzeň) is a Czech professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing with the Kunlun Red Star of the KHL.

Club career[]

Šustr grew up in Plzeň in the Czech Republic. He played the junior hockey with the HC Plzeň organisation and the second half of the 2005-06 season and the whole 2006-07 season played on loan with the HC Dukla Jihlava organisation. He made his senior debut in the 2008-09 season by playing 2 games with the HC Rokycany of the 2. Liga while he also played 13 games with the HC Plzeň under-20 team. Šustr moved to the United States at age 17 to play junior hockey. He finished the 2008-09 season with the Kenai River Brown Bears of the NAHL where he played 36 regular season games and 2 play-off games before moving up to the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL in 2009–10.[1] The Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha recruited Šustr to join their program in 2010.[2] He played three seasons in the NCAA with the Nebraska-Omaha, appearing in 111 games and recorded 15 goals and 51 points.[3] In the 2011-12 season, Šustr was selected into the NCAA (WCHA) All-Academic Team and in the 2012-13 season into the NCAA (WCHA) All-Academic Team again and into the NCAA (WCHA) Third All-Star Team.

Šustr participated in NHL development camps with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers. After completing his junior season with the Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha by playing there 39 games in his last season, he signed a professional contract with the Lightning on March 21, 2013.[4] He made his NHL debut on March 29, 2013 against the New Jersey Devils.[5] He appeared in two games in Tampa before being assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.[6] He appeared in eight regular season games with Syracuse, scoring two goals and adding an assist,[3] while the Crunch reached the Calder Cup final against the Grand Rapids Griffins.[7] In the play-offs, Šustr played in 18 games scoring 2 goals and adding 5 assists.

Šustr scored his first NHL goal on April 5, 2014 against Kari Lehtonen of the Dallas Stars. In this season, Šustr played 43 regular season games and 3 play-off games with the Lightning and 12 games with the Crunch. Next four seasons played Šustr only for the Lightning.

In 2018, Šustr signed with the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL. He played only 5 games with the Ducks and played 39 games with the San Diego Gulls of the AHL.

When the 2018-19 season ended, Šustr moved to the Asia joining the Kunlun Red Star of the KHL. He is signed there until the end of the 2020-21 season.

International career[]

Šustr played with the Czech National Team at the 2010 World Junior Championship and at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
