On September 20, 2015 upon completion of their fall meeting Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador announced that two leagues had been approved for the 2015-16 playing season, Avalon East Senior Hockey League and the Central/West Senior Hockey League.
The tournament will have the two league champions play a best-of-five series to determine the winner. The champion of the Cental/West League will host games one and two on March 19 and 20, 2016. The Avalon East League champion will game 3 on March 25th and if needed games 4 and 5 on March 26 and 27.
The release announcing the playoff also stated that "The Avalon East winning team will be permitted six (6) strengthening players from their own league for Herder competition."
The winner of the tournament will represent the province in the 2017 Atlantic Region Allan Cup qualifying tournament (if it is held); or they will advance to the 2017 Allan Cup if there are no other teams competing for the region's berth in the tournament as the 2017 tournament is being held in New Brunswick.
- Game 1: Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts defeated St. John's Caps 6-0
- Game 2: Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts defeated St. John's Caps 7-3
- Game 3: Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts defeated St. John's Caps 10-1
With the victory the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts advanced to the 2017 Allan Cup. As the Allan Cup is being held in Bouctouche, New Brunswick and New Brunswick was the only other province in the region to have teams playing at Senior AAA; and the New Brunswick provincial champion automatically advanced to the tournament as the Quebec region did not have any teams registered at the Senior AAA level and the unused spot traditionally goes to the host branch thus negating a need for a playoff for the regional berth in the tournament.
