These are the NCAA Division III independent men's ice hockey teams.
SUNY-Canton Kangaroos are in the process of elevating their program from the American Collegiate Hockey Association to NCAA and will eventually end up in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Apparently, either the school declined membership in the SUNYAC or were not voted into the hockey conference for the 2016-17 season.
- Daniel Webster was scheduled to join the New England Hockey Conference; however, the the Nashua, New Hampshire based school was owned by ITT Technical Institute who filed for bankruptcy protection after the United States government cracked down on the school. The school property was purchased by Southern New Hampshire University as they had made a bid on the campus. The school has begun the process of being combined into the SNHU community through a teach-out agreement and the school will cease to exist over the next two years. The school would continue to play as an independent for its final season of 2016-17.
- The Post University Eagles program commenced with the 2015-16 season and the team continues to play as an independent
