This is the 2016-17 Chinook Hockey League season.  This is the league's 48th season.  This would be the league's final season under this name as the league was renamed Allan Cup Hockey West during the 2017 off season.

For the third straight season the league had a pre-season classic. It was hosted by the Innisfail Eagles who also hosted the previous two year's event.  The event was held Sepetember 30, October 1st and 2nd at the Twin Arenas in Innisfail.

The March 11th championship series game made national headlines when Lacombe Generals player Kyle Sheen hit former Edmonton Oiler Ryan Smith who was playing for the Stony Plain Eagles. The hit in question took place in front of the net just after Smith had scored a goal. The league would end up suspending Sheen for 16 games.

Membership changes[]

  • The Bentley Generals relocated to Lacombe, Alberta and are renamed the Lacombe Generals.  However, due to extensive renovations at the arena in Lacombe they are spending the first two plus months playing road games until the facility was ready in early December.
  • After joining the league and then withdrawing prior to the 2015-16 season, the Rosetown Red Wings join the league for the regular season only.  The team will be Saskatchewan's representative at the Rathgaber Cup against the Manitoba champion for the Western Region spot in the 2017 Allan Cup

Playoffs[]

Format[]

The four Alberta based teams will compete in two best-of-seven rounds to determine the league champion which doubles as the provincial AAA championship.  The playoff champion earns a spot in the McKenzie Cup against the British Columbia champion for the region's spot in the 2017 Allan Cup being held in Bouctouche, New Brunswick.  The two British Columbia teams announced in January that they would not be playing at the Senior AAA level due to player commitments to their teams at the Senior AA level and would not be competing for the Allan Cup and thus the playoff champion will now advance directly to the 2017 Allan Cup.

The Rosetown Red Wings will compete for an Allan Cup spot by playing against the provincial champion of Manitoba in the Rathgaber Cup.
