This was the 1997-98 West Coast Hockey League season. This is the league's third season. The league expanded by four teams and went to division play for the first time. The CSKA Moscow did not play in the league as a touring team this season
Franchise changes[]
- The Fresno Falcons were renamed Fresno's Fighting Falcons.
- The Reno Renegades were renamed the Reno Rage.
- The Alaska Gold Kings suspended operations for the season, they would return the following season based out of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
- The Idaho Steelheads, Phoenix Mustangs, Tacoma Sabercats, and Tucson Gila Monsters are added as expansion teams.
