Pre-season[]
The Pirates suffered injuries to several players in training camp including Harold Darragh fracturing a rib and Gerry Lowrey spraining his ankle.
Regular Season[]
The November 19, 1929 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs was a wild scoring affair in which two defensemen scored 4 goals, the Pirates John McKinnon and the Leafs Hap Day. Hib Milks of the Pirates also had a hat trick while Frank Fredrickson had 7 points as Pittsburgh triumphed 10-5.
Herb Drury suffered a broken hand during the 5-3 loss on November 23, 1929 to the New York Rangers and missed 17 games. Frank Fredrickson performed three roles on the team (manager, coach and centreman) and had an excellent start to the season, scoring 11 points in the first 9 games. However, his knee was injured in the December 12, 1929 game against the Boston Bruins and his missed the rest of the season.
Goalie Red Spooner played his only NHL game during the Pirates 6-5 loss to the Rangers on January 18, 1930.
The Pirates finished last in the league and had the fifth worst season in NHL history, winning only 5 games and posting a 0.148 winning percentage.
